The Kalambule couple—Medson and Sophie—have qualified for the doubles of the Lab Enterprise Match Play after seeing off the pair of Golf Union of Malawi (GUoM) president James Chimwaza and Mayamiko Kalizang’oma at Blantyre Sports Club (BSC).

After tying on points on the 18th hole last Friday, the Kalambules must have gone back to the drawing board at home, which worked wonders on Saturday when they turned on a vintage display that saw them through to the finals.

According to the competition’s organising committee head Justice John Katsala, after tying on points in the initial contest, they could not go into sudden death because by then it was too dark.

“They agreed to come back on Sabbath (Saturday) afternoon to go into sudden death. They turned up as agreed and were all dressed up for the occasion.

“Everyone thought it was going to be another long and gruelling day of golf. But it wasn’t. Medson and Sophie destroyed Chimwaza and Maya on the 1st hole! They quickly shook hands and walked back to the clubhouse.

“Medson, donning his trademark cheeky grin, sat at a table with his wife and delved into family talk not worrying about the finals against Dr. [Adriano] Guarino and Andrew Santhe,” said Katsala through e-mail.

According to BSC golf captain Hudson Kantwanje, the final is slated for this Sunday.

In the singles, Margaret Mukwenha will face Furkan Gani; hence, closing date for registration is Friday.
